1923: The Flying Scotsman sets new travelling records
The 400-mile (640km) journey from London to Edinburgh shrank to a mere day trip as ‘The Flying Scotsman’ set off to inaugurate the London and North Eastern Railway’s new scheduled train service between the two cities.

The powerful new steam engine was said to be capable of pulling its line of carriages at 100mph (160kph).
