1981:  ‘Rudeboy’ Reggae King succumbs

Bob Marley died from cancer on May 11, 1981, at the young age of 36. The spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain caused his death.

Marley grew up as a ‘rudeboy’ in the Jamaican slums where reggae music and the Rastafarian cult have their roots. He and his group ‘The Wailers’ dedicated their concerts to Ras Tafari, the late Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, held to be the one true God.

Marley brought reggae and his religion to the world’s attention and his many fans had a hard time believing that the man who had made such irrepressible music had died.
