Isipingo Beach’s powerlifting twins break records
The brothers, who are Kingsway High School learners, competed against some of the sport's best athletes in the world and made their mark.
ISIPINGO Beach twin brothers, Riyaad and Rehaan Mahomed, have cemented their dominance in the sport of powerlifting after they won big and smashed records at the World Powerlifting Championships at Sun City on August 18.

The brothers, who are also Kingsway High School learners, competed against some of the sport’s best athletes in the world and made their mark.
Riyaad, who is 53kg, powerlifted a total of 397.5kg, winning gold in 95kg bench, silver for 167.5kg deadlift, and another silver for 135kg squat. Overall, he came second in the world, winning a silver medal.
In the process, Riyaad broke 14 records for SA sub-junior bench and deadlift and bench (single lift). He set a new Commonwealth bench (single lift) record, a new African record for sub-junior squat, bench, deadlift, and bench (single lift). He also set new African records for junior squat, bench, deadlift, total, and bench (single lift). Riyaad was awarded junior Protea colours for powerlifting.

At 59kg, Rehaan lifted a total of 440kg at the event, getting silver for 100kg bench, silver for 175kg deadlift, and bronze for 165kg squat. He also came second in the world in his division, winning a silver medal.
Rehaan broke 16 records and was also awarded junior Protea colours for powerlifting.
He broke African Open records for squat, bench, deadlift, and total; African Junior records for squat, bench, deadlift and total; African sub-junior records for squat, bench, deadlift and total, as well as the SA sub-junior total record.
