Sannie snatches silver at Games

WINKLESPRUIT athlete, Sannie Liebenberg earned a silver medal in the 3km power walk at the World Transplant Games held in Durban from 28 July to 4 August.

“I am over the moon. Having won silver on home ground is wonderful,” said an elated Sannie.

The 64-year-old who competed in her fourth Games had plenty of support from her children, grandchildren and siblings. Sannie underwent a heart transplant in 2001. “I want my donor’s family to know their sacrifice was not in vain.”

With the event now behind her, she does not plan to slow down. “I will never stop training. I think it was my last Games,” she said, with a smile. The next one will be held in Argentina in 2016.

South Africa placed third overall, which saw 81 athletes earn among them, 37 gold, 30 silver and 29 bronze medals.
