Clean-up message taken to heart in Doonside

In keeping with the theme of Clean-Up Month, one resident is making a difference in his community by brightening up his little corner of Toti.

Buzz Bezuidenhout has cut down bushes, planted flowers and painted the curbs around his business Buzz’s Laundromat in Beach Road, Doonside and the difference it has made to area is astounding.

“I’ve been here two years and I hardly ever see the municipality workers come here to clean,” he said. “Last year the contractor came every three to six months only. This year has been a bit better and they come about every two months.”

But this hasn’t stopped Buzz from taking matters into his own hands. “I cut the grass in the railway station yard on a regular basis and the staff there are happy I’m doing it.” So much so, they have taken the initiative and cleaned up the flower beds and painted the curbs, with Buzz’s help. “It’s nice to see them also making an effort. It’s now becoming a community effort.”

Buzz also trimmed back the bushes. “People were scared to walk along the road as criminals used to hide in the bushes. It just takes a little time to make a difference, although it can work out costly. Everybody should try to do it around their homes and businesses.”
