Moms urged to lace up ice hockey boots

Calling all ice skaters. The Southern Storm Ice Hockey Club based at Galleria is looking for more skaters to grow the club.

The club was formed in January 2012. Juniors and women practice on Mondays and Thursdays from 5.30pm to 6.45pm, and seniors practice from 7.00pm to 7.45pm.

League matches are played on Tuesdays at 6pm (women) and on Saturdays at 3.30pm (seniors).

“We are looking for players for all three sections,” said the club’s Kieren Edge.

A team must consist of a minimum of eight players and a maximum of 22. Games are three 20-minute periods.

“We split the club into two teams, called Thunder and Lightning, to play league matches. The junior league is from 14 years and younger, the seniors from 14-years up, and the women’s team from 13-years.”

Six ‘moms’ recently joined the club to form the women’s team and they are looking for more players to join. “We have integrated into the seniors, but we would love other moms to join us,” said one of the players, Lara Lombard.

“We are the only club in KZN that boasts a women’s team, which we are proud of,” said Kieren. “Some seniors play for KZN so the club boasts some great skaters.”

To join the club, contact Kieren on 079-163-8820.
