Isipingo armed robber shot dead

AN armed robber was shot dead and a policeman wounded during a business robbery in Isipingo on Monday, 11 November.

“At about 5.45pm, the owner of Eastcoast Engineering was at his shop, when he was approached by four men. They held him at gunpoint and demanded money. It is alleged the robbers assaulted the victim (44) before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money and a firearm.

An off-duty constable attached to the National Intervention Unit witnessed the robbers fleeing from the scene and gave chase. The robbers opened fire on him and he sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The policeman returned fire and fatally wounded one of them. Three men fled the scene unharmed and are still at large,” said Col Jay Naicker of the KZN police media centre.

“Paramedics arrived at a cash and carry and found two men lying on the ground. After they examined them, they found one man had died,” said Chris Botha of Netcare 911.

Isipingo SAP are investigating cases of business robbery, murder and attempted murder.

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni expressed her anger at the shooting of another policeman. “I want to thank the constable for being alert and reacting to a crime in progress despite being off-duty. We want to send a strong message to criminals that we will not be deterred by their violent activities and their actions will make us more determined to deal with crime more firmly,” she said.
