Temple’s stolen sacred deities recovered

A MAN who stole sacred items from a temple in Park Rynie was arrested by the Umzinto K9 Unit on Friday, 6 December.

“W/O Shanin Joothan and Sgt Kenneth Glover responded to the burglary at Chinna Reddy’s Temple in Third Street, Park Rynie at about 8.45am. They were given a description of a man who allegedly fled towards Second Street with the stolen property. They found a man fitting the description hiding in a private residential property and arrested him,” said Capt Thulani Zwane of the KZN police media centre.

The 34-year-old man, who lives in Phoenix, was staying with relatives in Alkins Drive, Park Rynie. Police seized a bag found in his possession which allegedly contained sacred brass deities and brass vessels used in Hindu worship. The property was positively identified by the owner of the temple.

The man is expected to appear in Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 9 December on charges of housebreaking and theft.
