Umkomaas Golf Club hosts Sappi invitational golf day
Congratulations to the organizers and all the staff, members and especially Garth Mulroy on making the day the success it was.

LAST Saturday, Umkomaas Golf Club hosted the Sappi invitational golf day and what a wonderful day it was, despite the intermittent rain earlier in the morning.
Congratulations to the organisers and all the staff, members and especially Garth Mulroy on making the day the success it was.
The whole day was very well supported with over a 100 players in the field for which UGC thanks them all, for starting their alliance game in the rain.
The ‘stand-out’ for everyone was that Garth agreed to tee off for one of the team’s fourball (for a small fee) on the first tee box which he did all morning, sometimes in the rain, much to the delight of all who watched him, whether they played or not. It’s marvellous to see an actual PGA player in action and to Garth UGC says thank you so much for taking the time out and joining the party, you certainly made someone’s day. The first tee can be so daunting with so many people watching you.
The winners and taking first prize in this tournament, considering the playing conditions, on a count out with 91 points was Dave Mulroy, Graham Coxell, Annette Thorold and Devlyn Fraser followed by the Weiss VW fourball of Jos Matthysen, Frans Klopper, Servaas van Niekerk and W van Wyk also with 91 points.
Taking third spot were the Naickers, Tom, Viv, Dean and Tash on 89 points closely followed by Stuart Harrison, Barry O’Conner, Trevor Hay and Peter Mc Carthy in fourth place with 88 points. The prize list went right down to 18th place and thanks and congratulations are extended to everyone who supported and played. The winners of the ‘pink ball’ competition was the Weiss VW team with Dave Mulroy nearest the pin on the fourth, Annette Thorold on the ninth, Jimmy Spear on the 13th and V Singh on the 17th hole.
Garth donated a Calloway driver for the club to raffle and the winner was Mike Harvard with C Reddy taking the second prize, Calloway gap-wedge and Jos Matthysen winning the box of Calloway balls.
After the excitement of Saturday’s news, the Wednesday results seem a bit tame, to say the least. But to those Wednesday players, their results are just as important. Visitors Claude da Silva and Lee Hodgkinson were warmly welcomed to the Club (it was a practise round for Saturday) but nonetheless, enjoyed their game.
The winner was Strand Striker Garth Wilyman on 39 points, with Chris Viljoen in second spot with 37 points.
There were a few players on 37 points but in third place was Peter Boshoff, counting out Rob Finlay (fourth), Ken Harding (fifth) and Sierd Lamminga (sixth). Well done to you all.
Next Saturday, 14 December is the Toyota monthly medal for both women and men, with social golf on Sunday, 15 December.
The next Weiss VW sponsored afternoon is next Wednesday, 18 December with the following Saturday, 21 December also a Weiss VW sponsored day.
The time sheets are all up on the notice board. Make a note on your cell phone of the following numbers and call either Sonny on 083-356-0639 or Pam on 084-616-3155 since the phone lines at the club are down once again.
All at the club wish Garth Mulroy the very best of luck at the Nelson Mandela championship being played right here in Durban.
Many members will be there to cheer him on and UGC will be there in spirit.
