Comrades takes it toll on Toti runners

It's a misconception that the down run is easier than the up run, as for at least the first 30km you have to climb and then face all the descents, which shatter your quads muscles en route to Durban.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club reports that the atmosphere and vibe at the start of the 89km Comrades Marathon on Sunday was electrifying.

With the singing of the national anthem and playing of Chariots of Fire, just over 16,000 athletes set off to make the epic journey to Durban.

It’s a misconception that the down run is easier than the up run, as for at least the first 30km you have to climb and then face all the descents, which shatter your quads muscles en route to Durban.

Man of Toti’s top contenders made the critical error of starting way too fast, with the second half of the Comrades making them pay the price, with a number of athletes having to drop out along the way.

Once again the coach’s words of even pace, even splits were not adhered to by top contenders.

Everybody that finished and achieved their goals well done, unfortunately some athletes were unable to make the finish. Regroup and remember – Comrades 2015 will be back. Learn from your mistakes and adjust your training programmes.

Toti results from the Comrades Marathon:

Men: 1st J Shishani 7:23; 2nd Chris Stange 8:16; 3rd M McCalgan 8:17.

Women: K Sobrino 8:09; 2nd K Wren 10:10; 3rd S Linden 10:47. 1st novice runner was K Wren.

The Comrades prize giving will be held on Saturday, 7 June at the Toti picnic area opposite Splash. It’s a bring and braai and the club will supply rolls and salads. The function will start at 11.30am with prize giving and handing out of Comrades trophies. The club encourages all Comrades runners, family and friends to go along and celebrate the Comrades runners’ achievements.
