RWFL’s Comrades earn their medals

All five our novices made it in time just shows all that early morning and long distance training helped.

SUNDAY’s weather was perfect for the Comrades runners, with a cold start in Pietermaritzburg at 5.30am and a more pleasant, warmer experience by the time they reached halfway.

With Shaun Finn leading Run Walk for Life’s (RWFL) men and Lizette Botha leading the women, all the club’s runners were doing well at this stage.

Then, in the difficult second half when your legs are tired and the downhills are killers, the runners’ training and preparation paid off to get them home. They all finished well within the cut-off time, with Shaun Finn and Lizette Botha leading the men and women. Well done to everyone who finished and earned their medal. All five of RWFL’s novices made it in time, which shows that early morning and long distance training helped.

Thanks to all the helpers on the road.

RWFL challenges the unfit or overweight to join with a very reachable goal in mind. Call Jan Botha on 082-290-4025.

Despite the cold weather, it is a pleasure to see how many athletes turn up for training.

The club hosts a get-together weekend from 13 to 16 June at Midmar Dam’s Morgenzon campsite. Book and join in a wind-down, relaxing weekend where the club will plan its fundraising for the second half of the year.

The new date for the CANSA Relay for Life is 20 September, with a 5pm start on Saturday. It goes through the night to 5am on Sunday. The club has four teams so far, with 10 members per team. Runners are still welcome to put their names down for this event. Call Jan Botha on 082-290-4025 to enter this event, which is not a race but a fun event to honour those who are living, died of or are a survivor of cancer.

RWFL’s four teams challenge all schools, sports clubs, companies, school sports teams and families to put teams together. So far no-one has risen to the challenge.

Remember to enter the Totalsports women’s race, which is a pre-entry only at Totalsports shops or online. Remember this Saturday’s 10km run and walk from Amanzimtoti High School at 5.30am. There is no Sunday race.
