Bait fish flurry bring hopes of sardine run

On Monday, 14 July mackerel scad were netted at Warner Beach.

Despite a flurry of bait fish being netted on the South Coast in the last week, there are still no signs of the elusive sardines.

On Friday morning, 11 July six crates of red eye sardines, two crates each of mackerel and pilchards were netted at Mtwalume, close to Hibberdene.

On Monday, 14 July mackerel scad were netted at Warner Beach, leading to great excitement.

“Unfortunately it was nothing to get excited about, as this is common all year round,” said the KZN Sharks Board’s Mike Anderson-Reade.

“I’m still hopeful we will get sardines this year, with the water temperature dropping.”
