Lions’ first woman president takes reigns

"My biggest goal this year is to reach out to a different community."

Ethekwini South Lions club made history last week when it inducted its first ever female president, Margaret Haus.

Margaret joined Lions four years ago. She was district treasurer for two-and-a-half years and presently serves as district financial chairman.

“I was overwhelmed at being named as president, and surprised that my club members believe in me to appoint me as their next president,” she said.

“My biggest goal this year is to reach out to a different community. I would like to help start building a crèche in the informal settlement of Dakota Beach as there is none. The security and education of a child should be taken seriously. The crèche will let parents know that their children have a safe place to go during the day while they are at work, and be given a small plate of food. This can make a huge, positive change in the community.”

The first step to Margaret’s goal became a reality when Conlog donated two shipping containers to house the creche, which were delivered on Friday, 18 July.

Margaret and her husband Kryn relocated from Pietermaritzburg to Toti nine years ago.

“With the help of my fellow Lions members, I hope to make many changes to the community as possible.

Seeing the changes and smiles on people’s faces when you have done something for them, no matter how big or small, working on projects, building new alliances and friendships with supporting businesses and partners who share in the same goals is the best part of being a Lion.

I invite everyone to our projects and meetings, so that they can see what a difference we make in people’s lives and if they have the same passion, I encourage them to join.”
