ATM card jammers strike again

Where's the security?

EDITOR – On a Sunday morning after church, can you believe how blatantly and very easy it was to be waylaid at the ATM?

While there is a security guard, he doesn’t appear to be very alert.

The card gets jammed. Two very well dressed, plausible South Africans are trying to be very helpful. They are told to get lost and go away but still persist.

Where’s the security? He is there and may be in cahoots as he’s not authoritative. One’s attention is distracted and away these ‘gentlemen’ go – and there’s no sign of the jammed card.

Importantly, the phone line to Absa is engaged so the incident and cancelling the card is held up. Perhaps the robbers hog the line until the card has been used and swiped at another ATM in Winklespruit and swiped at a general store.

While there’s a limit of R1,000 on the card, unknowingly for the unaware owner, the ‘swipe’ limit is the same, so the loss is R2,000.
