Adopt a shelter dog, urges SPCA

If unable to adopt, donate food to the animal welfare organisation.

AS October is adopt a shelter dog month, Amanzimtoti SPCA encourages the community to rather adopt an animal from a shelter, instead of buying from a breeder.

“We also celebrate ‘Animal World Week’ from 4 to 11 October. World Animal Week is a week of events sponsored by the World Society for the Protection of Animals to celebrate animals. It encourages schools to educate pupils on how to take care of their animals and how important animals are to everyone,” said SPCA PRO, Michelle Hannan.

The animal welfare organisation is aware everyone cannot adopt a shelter dog, but encourages people to donate food during this time as it is one of its busiest months of the year.

“Last year over 500 stray dogs came in to the SPCA in October, due to the fireworks season starting. We challenge the public to bring in a donation of dog or cat food in October. We will take your photo with your donation, post it on our Facebook page where you can tag yourself and challenge a friend.”
