WESSA rehabilitate sand dunes
The rehabilitation will begin from the dune immediately behind Hotel Rocks and extend to Foster Road.
The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) Kingsburgh branch committee will take on the challenge of rehabilitating the beach sand dunes south of Winklespruit.
“This decision arose from Toti Conservancy’s report back meeting at the Good Shepherd Church,” said chairman of Kingsburgh WESSA, Rob Jack.
A meeting was arranged with eThekwini Municipality’s park and recreation department, and a site visit made.
A plan of action was formulated and an approximate date of implementation set.
We will work together with the Metro team, which is at present completing rehabilitation on a section of the beach north of Winklespruit.
Once the necessary structures have been put in place Kingsburgh WESSA will maintain these and extend them, where and when necessary. Hopefully work should begin in the next week or two.”
The rehabilitation will begin from the dune immediately behind Hotel Rocks and extend to Foster Road.
“We will enclose the area with poles and let the sand build up naturally before planting shrubs,” said Rob. “We want to extend the dunes down towards the sea.
This will be an ongoing project. It’s not very big, it is long-term and we will have to transport a lot of vegetation into the area.”
