Kamalinee Primary School grade 7 pupil, Reece April Govender (14) represented her school and the Isipingo civic library in a creative essay competition and placed first in eThekwini.
“It felt fantastic to be placed first in eThekwini and it was definitely an experience I’ll never forget,” she said.
For her sterling efforts, she was selected by the Luthuli Museum, based in Stanger, for a poetry-writing workshop and was mentored by two professional writers.
At the end of the workshop, three pieces of Reece’s poetry were included in an Anthology of Creative Writing. This book will be housed in all libraries in the province and the school will receive 30 for its school library.
“I enjoy writing because I love reading books and creating stories from my heart.
My favourite subjects that I like to write about are journeys and adventures with different experiences.
I would one day love to publish a book about my life experience.”
