Humour sees Days through 67 years of marriage

Kay’s advice to young adults who want to get married is to learn to cook.

Doonside residents Basil and Kay Day celebrate 67 years of marriage as well as Basil’s 90th birthday on Wednesday, 8 October.
The couple have known each other since Basil was 18-years-old and Kay 12. They married in 1947 in Johannesburg. Basil was a lecturer for 30-years at the University of Johannesburg and he lectured part-time at Wits University. Kay was a personal assistant at Haggie Limited until her retirement.

While on holiday at Shangri La flats in 1990, the couple decided it was time to move to KwaZulu-Natal. After backwards-and-forwards travelling to Shangri La for eight years, they moved to Toti in 1998. Kay’s advice to young adults who want to get married is to learn to cook. “The secret to our marriage is that we have a house full of laughter,” said Basil.
Basil (90) and Kay (85) have a son Allen who is married to Marlene. Kay is part of the 21 Club, Amanzimtoti Women’s Institute and the garden club while Basil is a social bowler at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club. Basil jokingly said Kay enjoys commercial exercise – shopping.
