Cow carcass left to rot

The cow had been transported to the SPCA premises by Toti SAPS.

Visitors to Toti SPCA were appalled to see and smell the rotting carcass of a cow on the road verge opposite the animal organisation’s front gate last week.

According to the SPCA when queried by the SUN, the cow had been transported to its Nyathi Road premises by Toti SAPS on Sunday, 28 September, as it had been injured by a vehicle in Kissin Lane and had to be euthanased.

Durban Solid Waste (DSW) refused to collect the body as it was on SPCA property. It was then moved outside to the lawn opposite the SPCA on Wednesday, 1 October.

“DSW then said it wouldn’t fetch the body, because we had moved the cow from where it was originally euthanased, despite telling us several times they would collect it,” said SPCA Toti PRO, Michelle Hannan.

The cow was eventually removed on Wednesday, 8 October.

The Sun sent a query to DSW why the organisation initially refused to collect the dead cow, but is still awaiting a response.
