Raging surf sees nippers train in Illovo River

The younger ones also had a chance to try out knee boards.

WINKLESPRUIT Surf Lifesaving Club (SLC) reports that storm surf smashing into the coast over the past weekend made training too dangerous to be held at Winkle beach on Sunday.

This resulted in the training being moved down to Illovo River.

The younger age group nippers used the flat conditions to hone water entry skills and practise wading, while the older ones were trained on racing knee board techniques. The younger ones also had a chance to try out knee boards.

The junior and senior active members also made use of the flat water to carry out final drills in preparation for their JLA and LA exams to be undertaken this coming Sunday. The club wishes them well in these exams.

Back at the club, the nipper parents were cooking up a storm in preparation for the return of their hungry children. Thanks again to the efforts of the catering team. Gary ‘I don’t dance’ Barber is away in the UK, attending the wedding of an old member, so he missed out on the proceedings. Training next Sunday will be with Brad Fell.

Competition training commenced this week and those not up to speed should contact Gareth Hazell for information on coaches, training days and times. As the coming season will have three masters competitions – all local – it is time for them to shed some winter cobwebs and start training as well.

In a different sporting code, Kelly Fell competed in the SA junior athletics champs in Bloemfontein over the weekend and won gold in long jump and earned 6th place in 100m sprint in her age group – the club is proud of you, Kelly.

On Saturday, the Currie Cup semi-finals were shown on the new big screen and with the recent changes being made to the upstairs interior, this will become a popular sport viewing venue. The club will be open for the finals and Lions and Western Province supporters are welcome to join in watching the game on Saturday. They can still wear Sharks supporters’ kit as the club supports the Sharks and any team that plays against the Lions.

Winklespruit SLC will also use this event as the official ‘roof wetting’ of the new enclosed balcony. A bring and braai will be held. Fires will be lit at half time.
