Fireworks-fearing strays find refuge at SPCA
Most of the animals have been reunited with their owners.

AMANZIMTOTI SPCA accommodated 22 stray animals last week due to fireworks, particularly big bangs being let off over the Diwali festival.
“Fortunately most of the animals have been reunited with their owners,” said SPCA manager, Tracey Girling.
However, the animal welfare organisation suffered a fatality when a female cross-breed boerboel accommodated in its stray block injured herself and had to be put down.
“Due to the serious injuries she suffered on her paws, she was euthanased on Thursday, 23 October. All our dogs had been given calming medication before the start of the fireworks.”
With the fireworks season now in full swing, with Guy Fawkes and New Year coming up, Tracey advises pet owners to take note and keep their animals safe, as they can suffer horrific injuries as they try to escape from the loud bangs.
She also urges the community to report stray animals to the SPCA. “If you pick up a stray, let us know. Our aim is to reunite the animal with the owner, we don’t just put strays down. Over the festive period, when people are away and when we pick up strays, we accommodate them for a longer period in our stray block.
