Beautification promotes eco-schools
The beautification project aims to promote a healthy living environment in schools and to encourage as well as create awareness around these issues among teachers and pupil.
SCHOOLS from the Upper South Coast participating in the annual school beautification project met at Umbogavango Nature Reserve on Friday, 6 March.
The meeting launched this year’s beautification programme.
The beautification project aims to promote a healthy living environment in schools and to encourage as well as create awareness around these issues among teachers and pupil. Through the school beautification programme it’s hoped that 10 schools will join the eco-school programme.
There are three eco-schools in the Amanzimtoti area; Umbogintwini Primary School, Amanzimtoti Primary School and Kingsway High School. The eco schools programme is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The eco schools programme is run by Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (Wessa) in South Africa. There are five focus areas in the eco-schools programme: Resource use, nature and biodiversity, local and global issues, healthy living and community and heritage. Schools choose a focus area and turn that focus area into a strength at their school. For example, starting a vegetable garden at a school to meet the food needs of pupils.
