UGC trio of women to contest bronze champs
The guys played very well and it's thanks to Bruce Sutcliffe for stepping in to play at the last minute.

ONCE again, Garth Mulroy has surprised Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) – not only was he +2 (74) on the first day of the Africa Open played at the East London Golf Club, giving everyone a near heart attack as the projected cut-off was -1, but he pulled everything out of his bag and shot a wonderful 66 in the second day to be well clear of the cut-line on -4 on Friday.
He was very consistent on both Saturday (70) and Sunday (70) to finish at T29 with a score of -8.
The winner of the Africa Open this year was South African, Trevor Fisher Jnr with a magnificent score of -24. The wind played a big part over this past weekend and quite a few notable South African players missed the cut on Friday. The next tournament on the Sunshine Tour is the Tshwane Open at the Pretoria Country Club starting on 12 March.
Three UGC women, Bryony Rogers, Annette Gillett and Leigh Beckerling are heading to Beachwood Golf Club on Friday, 13 March (hope none of them are superstitious) to play in the KZN Bronze Championships. All the very best of luck to these three intrepid women on Friday – may your drives be straight and your putts in the hole. The following week it’s the turn of the silver division women, Sabiha Bacaus, Michelle van der Merwe and Natalie Singer who will take on all the women in KZN in that division. Good luck to you all.
The Allerton League team played at Papwa Sewgolum Golf Club last Sunday against Maritzburg Golf Club, defeating them 7 and 5. The guys played very well and it’s thanks to Bruce Sutcliffe for stepping in to play at the last minute. It certainly helped that the course was in good condition. Well done to the whole team on their win. The team is looking for players with a handicap of nine and over, this is a great way for younger players to be exposed to different golf courses. Interested players can contact the office every day of the week, including weekends, for more information. The next game is against Durban Central and will be played at Cato Ridge Golf Club on Sunday, 22 March.
Wednesday was the individual stableford competition. Visitor, Dave Rickards was welcomed to the competition which he won in fine style with 40 points, three shots clear of his nearest rival who was Andy Davidge in second place on 37 points. Taking the third slot was Nelson Moonsamy on 36 points.
Saturday was monthly medal, sponsored as always by Halfway Toyota Widenham and it’s thanks to Devlyn Fraser for welcoming visitors Cathy Kamstra and Bonga Dlamini at prize giving.
The winner of the A division was none other than Bruce Sutcliffe on a 74, counting out Vic de Klerk into the runner-up spot also with a 74. The B division was won by Dave Mulroy on a very good 68 with runner-up, Simon van den Bosch on 70. The biggest division, the C division was only just won by John Gillett on 70 with Graham Coxell right behind him as runner-up on 71. The women also played their medal round on Saturday and the winner was visitor Cathy Kamstra on a 71 followed by Annette Gillett with a 74, counting out Val Hazell also on a 74. Annette won the least putts competition with 31 putts. Members are reminded to close their round after all their competition games. Your rounds will be opened for you each time you play.
The jackpot was snatched up by Simon van den Bosch with 10 points but the hidden birdie (on the 15th hole) will be carried over to next week. Graham Coxell took home the attendance draw, Vesa Suhonen won the football sweep with his team, Wycombe Wanderers.
Next Saturday, 14 March is the 4BBB stableford. There is a group playing on Sunday, 15 March at 7am but there is still lots of space available for social golf later in the morning. Call the club on 039-973-1042 for your tee time.
Last Sunday was the Battle of the Bowlers vs the Golfers at Umkomaas Bowling Club, which was enormous fun. Halfway through the ‘rinks’, the scores were swapped, which was hilarious to say the least. The whole effort was well supported, which was won -by default – by the golfers. One wonders if the tables were turned and the bowlers were invited to play golf, what would happen? Food for thought. The braai afterwards was also enjoyed by all. It was so glad to see Cathy Fraser up and about playing bowls after her ‘episode’ last week.
Last but by no means least, the women will host a bingo evening on 27 March. Watch this space next week for details on this fun-filled evening. Visit www.umkomaasgolf.co.za
