Donate blankets, warm clothing for refugee camp

South Coast Sun and Toti Child Welfare offices are collection points for donations

DONATIONS of blankets and warm clothing, especially for children but also for adult men and women, are being collected for displaced foreigners who are being housed in the refugee camp at Isipingo.

Toti Child Welfare offices are a collection point for the donations, which will be co-ordinated and handed over to the camp’s inhabitants by Cllr Jaco Pienaar.

From Monday, donations of old, warm clothing and blankets can also be dropped off at the Sun offices, 33 Main Road in Doonside.

According to Pienaar, businesses have made food donations, and the churches as well as Lions have started to collect aid for the refugees living in the camp.

Some 300 displaced foreigners are living in the camp on the sports field in Isipingo Beach, after being ousted from their homes in the recent xenophobic attacks in Isipingo, Umlazi and Malagazi. They have been forced to flee, leaving behind their belongings. “With the cold front moving in, there is a major need for warm clothing and blankets,” said Pienaar.
