Drought drives water conservation workshop

Water-saving approaches were shared.

A WATER conservation workshop hosted by the South Durban Basin Area Based Management (SDB ABM) was recently held in Isipingo, after water shortages plagued some areas in KZN due to drought.

The aim of the workshop was to share water-saving approaches through educational programmes, discourage illegal water connections, ensure compliance to water bylaws, policies and regulations. It also aimed to share the latest developments from national, provincial and branches of local government.

Representatives from the different spheres of government gave talks on regulations and policies and emphasised that practical steps need to be taken to conserve water. It was reiterated at the workshop that programmes aimed at curbing water wastage need to be implemented sooner rather than later.

Unilever South Africa presented a strategy that works for them on saving water without reducing their production figures. This served as proof that it’s possible for businesses to participate in water conservation

“We want to bring businesses under one roof to discuss methods on how to conserve our precious resource. Emanating from the workshop, we are going to form a waste management club to develop programmes aimed at caring for our environment. These programmes will be implemented in line with government themes and international campaigns on environmental issues,” said SDB ABM municipal services manager, Sifiso Xulu.
