SUNDAY was ‘fun day’ at Amanzimtoti Bowls Club where the barflies competition rocked the greens and partied afterwards to the great music of DJ Alf Bingham.
The competition, which is open to anyone who wants to try playing bowls, was well supported by bowlers and non-bowlers alike.
The winning team was Elsie Walker, Barry Buckland, George Young and Ben Venter; followed by Liz Morgan-Davies, Mickey Roche, Greg and Dawn. Third place went to Adie Fuller, Shayne, Leigh and Linda; first session prize went to John Allers, Archie Walker, Sharon-Ann, and Ed; second session was won by Colin Coetzee, Trevor, Kim and Errol. The prize for the most bowls was won by Gustav, Jock, Steve and Jacqui.
On the more serious side of bowls, four women’s open singles games shared the greens with barflies. Robyn Hutton defeated Michelle Pitchers, Jane Coetzee defeated Lynn Joubert, Jackie Holdrick lost to Jeanne Alexander and Tokkie de Kock lost to Marion Crouch.
The results of the final round of the women’s inter-club league are: Toti A five points; Toti B zero points; Toti C three points and Toti D zero points. In the men’s inter-club league round seven game, first division Toti A beat Stella Park 5-2; second division Toti B lost 3-4 to Parkhill A; third division Toti C lost 2-5 to Wentworth A; fifth division Toti D won 3-2 against Umhlali CC ‘C’; sixth division Toti E lost 0-5 to Durban E; sixth division Toti F won 3-2 over Westville CC ‘C’.
The winners of the men’s monthly trips were Glen Scorgie, Peter Callaghan and Terry Morgan; second place went to Alec Stirzaker, Coy Schrauwen and Barry Buckland, and second session was won by Les John, Ken Baker and Ken Leech. Doreen Salmond and Jackie Holdrick won the women’s 2-4-2, with Pam Chalder-Royle and Rosemary Daniel second; second session went to Susan Erasmus and Elmarie Young, and Pam Chalder-Royle won the 100 board. In men’s scroungers, Neville Doman came first, Dave Kemp second and Mike Roberts third. Plate A was won by Lofty van Tonder and plate B by Wessie van der Westhuizen.
At TGIF the winner of the 100 board was Gaynor Snyman. Clive Hambley was not present to receive the members draw, so the pot will rise once again to R400. Lucky number 13 came up in the key draw, and this time it was very lucky for ‘the Damagers’ (Talla and Lesley) as they chose the right key to open the box and win the prize. Hence the pot reverts to R1,000 again next week.
Celebrating birthdays this week are Gaythri Ramklass, Ken Leech, Greg McLeod, Stan Shawe and Ken Baker. Enjoy your special day from all at ABC. Thoughts are also with those who are not in the best of health, especially Babs Swart who is still in hospital. The club hopes everyone returns to strength and health soon.
The club heard with sadness of the death of ex-bowler, Cynthia Fountain. She always willingly ran the winter table at the women’s winter tournament up until last year, when she had to give up because of ill health. Condolences are sent to her family and friends, she will be sadly missed.
