Teen angler’s luck improves with prospective new record

The Kuswag Skool grade 10 pupil made the national Protea U16 fishing team again this year.

Toti angler Sian Pretorius is waiting with bated breath to find out this week if his catch of a 9.4kg Natal snoek is a new junior record.

The Kuswag Skool grade 10 pupil landed the fish at Illovo Beach on Friday morning, 3 July.

The standing record is 7.5kg.

On Monday morning, 6 July he landed a garrick of 6.6kg, also at Illovo Beach, to top off a great week of fishing.

“Illovo Beach is my favourite fishing spot, in summer or winter,” said Sian, who made the national Protea U16 fishing team again this year.

“We fish against Namibia at Jeffrey’s Bay in December, which I’m very excited about. I fished Jeffrey’s Bay during nationals and it is very good fishing, so I’m confident of doing well.”

Sian moved to Toti from Johannesburg in 2009, but was already an experienced coastal fisherman after accompanying his father Ian on fishing trips to Kosi Bay when he was younger.

The 16-year-old Warnadoone angler tries to throw a line every day after school and while on holiday, has been fortunate to cast every day. “I believe in the saying ‘the more you fish, the luckier you get’, so I will definitely be fishing as much as possible ahead of the tournament against Namibia.”

The catch is a pending new junior record.
