Beetge exceeds 67 minutes at civic duty

We eventually collected a total of 67 bags, supplied by Durban Solid Waste.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge, assisted by a group of civic-minded helpers, made sure he exceeded his 67 minutes of civic duty on Mandela Day on Saturday, 18 July.

“The morning started off with a trip to the end of School Road where the Bhekulwandle area starts. There are dwellings where 30 people from different ages and races live in a small area. We fed them warm homemade soup and bread and supplied each occupant with some tinned soup for later use,” said Cllr Beetge.

This was followed by a clean-up of the park at the lower end of Kingsway near the Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit in Doonside.

“This area is frequented by the homeless and destitute, who are responsible for the litter that consists mainly of empty liquor containers and newspapers.

While the parks department recently cut alien vegetation in the area, it resulted in more litter being exposed and we eventually collected a total of 67 bags, supplied by Durban Solid Waste.

Some of our group then departed to other events organised in Kingsburgh West, where they cleaned a park and handed out food parcels, Isipingo, where clothing was handed out to children in the transit camp, uMlazi, where they painted a house that was damaged in a fire, and Umkomaas, where they cleaned a stretch of road and beach, resulting in a total of 528 minutes of community service.”
