60 years of wedded bliss for Badenhorsts
The pair met when Monica joined the Railways in 1953, where Piet worked.
Warner Beach residents, Piet (82) and Monica (79) Badenhorst have proven that with a little hard work, marriage can last forever as they celebrated their 60th anniversary on Thursday, 28 April.
“I’ve lived in Toti for 61-and-a-half years,” said Monica, who has been unwell lately but has made a full recovery. “My parents used to have a fruit farm in Doonside and the holidaymakers would stop and buy all their fruit there before going back home.”
That farm was also where Piet and Monica celebrated their reception after getting married in 1956 in the NG Kerk in Smith Street, Durban, which is still standing today.
“I was born in Prieska in the Northern Cape and Monica was born in Upington only 100 miles away, but we met in Toti,” said Piet, who played cricket and rugby for Toti’s first teams over the years. The pair met when Monica joined the Railways in 1953, where Piet worked.
They have three daughters – Maritjie, Annamarie and Belinda. They celebrated their diamond anniversary in Toti surrounded by their friends.
