Sewage leaks plugged

Three sections of the 400mm main line was replaced between Northway and the N2.

There are no reports of wastewater seepage or breaks into the Msimbazi, Illovo, Winkle, Little Toti or Toti rivers.

That’s the word from the city’s wastewater engineer who confirmed on Tuesday, 6 Septemer that intensified action over the last two weeks has succeeded in clearing the backlog.

“This follows on the back of three sections of the 400mm main line that was replaced between Northway and the N2, as well as a broken pipe along the Mopani line following reports of foamy water lower down at the Valley Road bridge, both of which caused contamination of the Little Amanzimtoti River,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

Teams also walked the Kingfisher, Winifred Close and Thomas Holstead lines and no spillage was located in the Illovo River from the Lower Illovo village.

“At 1.30pm on the same day, beach management also confirmed they were unable to detect any further flow, although the Little Amanzimtoti estuary remained contaminated as the river mouth, while flowing, was still effectively closed,” said Cllr Beetge.

“The Amanzimtoti River, contaminated by the temporary wastewater pipes collapsing at Mayville Terrace last week, also remains contaminated but expectations are that the river will breach the mouth naturally by the weekend.”
