Biker Pops will be remembered

Pops was a well-known biker since his love of biking started in 1997.

Henry John Donovan, or Pops as he was affectionately known, died on Monday, 19 September.

Pops was born in 1946 in Rosettenville, Johannesburg and attended St George’s Orphanage.

He met his wife Joanne ‘Moms’ Donovan at a jiving (dancing) competition in Johannesburg and they were married on 5 February 1971 at Springs Court House.

He lived in Toti since 1983.

“Our dad was a people’s person – outgoing and friendly,” said his daughter Wendy.

“He was compassionate, caring, helpful and kind, and he had a good sense of humour.

He always had time for everyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Our dad was a dedicated husband and father and he was my mom’s best friend.”

Pops was a well-known biker since his love of biking started in 1997 until the day he died. He was a proud member of the Monarchs Motorcycle Club since 1998.

He used to play soccer, took part in horse jumping, diving and swimming. He excelled at ballroom dancing lesson and was a very good drummer.

He loved woodwork and working with his hands, and he loved his grandchildren.

“A man is not measured by the wealth he has or the material possessions he acquires. He is measured by his legacy, by the impact he has made in the lives of those privileged enough to have met and known him.

Pops’ legacy is just that. We are all richer because of him and we will always have his smile tattooed on our hearts.

We will all miss his mischievous smile, that twinkle in his eyes and his awesome stories. He was one in a million.” said Wendy.

Pops is survived by his wife Joanne, daughters Wendy and Jacqueline, his son Robert and five grandchildren.

He was laid to rest on Saturday, 24 September. In a tribute to him, about 100 bikers gathered at Seadoone Mall to partake in a mass ride to the church before the start of his funeral.
