Brazen burglars clean out home while 11 sleep

It is suspected the men drugged them while they slept.

Brazen robbers cleaned out a Wessex Drive home in Winklespruit while the home owners and their guests were sound asleep in the early hours of Sunday morning, 23 October.

Jennifer Strydom said there were 11 people in their Glen Hathaway flat, including seven adults. One of the adults slept in the lounge and the robbers even pulled the duvet over his face while they ransacked the premises.

“One of my friends thought she heard a noise but when she saw the lounge light on, which the robbers had put on, she thought the person sleeping downstairs was having a smoke and she went back to bed,” said Jennifer.

“None of the rest of us heard a thing.”

The police estimate four to eight men cleared out the Strydoms’ flat. They took a gaming console, cellphones, a tablet and laptops.

“They even took the pepper spray out of my bag and my wedding rings,” said Jennifer. “They stole my guests’ cigarettes and lighters that were left lying around, their shoes and jackets, a baby’s walking ring and my children’s bicycles.

We have lost between R50,000 to R60,000 worth of goods. The worst is my business laptop that has every vital document on. Even my USB memory sticks were taken and they have all my photos on.”

Jennifer said she usually wakes up at 4am but on Sunday only awoke at 5am with a “weird headache”. It is suspected the men drugged them while they slept.
