Amazing transformations by teen artist

Zandelee (18) Terblanche effortlessly transforms ordinary faces into made-up masterpieces

A TOTI teen is sure to take the special effects and make-up artistry industry by storm when she matriculates at the end of this year, if her current self-taught talent in the arena is anything to go by.

Zandelee (18) Terblanche effortlessly transforms ordinary faces into made-up masterpieces – and all through techniques she picked up and mastered while watching Youtube videos on the subject.

Despite having no formal training, the artistic teen is a perfectionist in everything from formal make-up for functions to super special effect creations that leave you feeling completely creeped out.

The Amanzimtoti High School matriculant spent her first 11 school years at Kuswag Skool and then moved to Toti High to complete her matric. Having dabbled with drawing and painting in her art curriculum at school, it was when friends first asked who did her eyebrows that she took an interest in make-up.

She ‘did it for fun’ while trying her hand at the craft last year, but by the beginning of this year, the bug had bitten. “I told my dad I wanted to buy some make-up and although he thought we’d spend about R500,  we ended up spending R3,500 on a starter kit,” said the confident teen.

Zandelee helped out with stage make-up for the school production at Kuswag and at Westville Theatre Club last year.

While her career plans once included law or journalism, these days her mind is firmly set on a path in the film make-up industry. Although she first plans to au pair for a few years, this steady-handed teen will undoubtedly be plying her trade in the special effects make-up field in the future.

“Halloween is my favourite time of the year – I love gore make-up. It’s tough to source affordable fake blood in SA, so I’ve concocted my own formula. I use body wax to create wounds and cotton wool to create the impression of torn flesh,” explained Zandelee. Through layering shades of eyeshadow and varying shades of her fake blood, she transforms her models into scary monsters.
