Surprise success for young skater
Although she has only having been skating for two years, this promising young skater has already known success.
A young Amanzimtoti figure skater is breaking the ice with a win at an inter-provincial championships in Cape Town on Friday, 14 October
Nine-year-old Kuswag Primary Skool pupil, Nadia Bergh won first place in her sparrows division at the Grandwest Arena.
Although she has only having been skating for two years, during which her club’s ice rink was closed for eight months, this promising young skater has already known success.
On 21 August she won the Seals Club competition. She then placed second in the inter-schools competition in September.
She came fourth in the Gauteng inter-provincial championships later in the month and crowned off a fantastic season with her first place victory in one of the biggest competitions held in South Africa.
“I didn’t expect to come first, so it was a surprise when I won,” said the grade 3 pupil.
“I wanted to start skating when I watched my friend and babysitter skate at the Galleria Ice Rink. At first it was difficult but then it got easier. Now it’s getting more difficult again as I learn more.”
Nadia is now training and preparing for the final competition of the year, the KZN provincial championships, which will be held on Saturday, 19 November.
“After winning, I feel more confident for the KZN champs. I’m hard at work training so that I can do well.”
The pint-sized skater is also a musician who plays the piano and melody horn when she is not participating in hockey or swimming.
She is coached by provincial coach, Wendy Van Der Hammen and Nikita Pillay.
“Nadia started with me in February,” said Wendy. “Before that she was a club skater who had never competed before.
Within eight months of coaching her, Nadia managed to win competitions.
She is a very talented young skater.
Nadia also has a basic skills coach, Nikita Pillay, who has done wonders for her. It’s been a real team effort with extremely supportive parents.
We wish this talented young Toti skater every success for the future.”
