Toti peace artist comes close second in national Lions contest
My inspiration for my poster was the sun rise depicting a new peace in our country and the celebration of peace.
Budding young Amanzimtoti artist Danielle Ware’s Peace Poster entry was awarded runner-up place at the multiple district judging.
Danielle’s poster made the top three out of 20 finalists who reside in the Amanzimtoti area after they were judged at club level by artists from the Upper South Coast Art Association in October.
Her entry went forward for judging at district level at the Lions District 410C mid-year conference on 5 November, after she placed first in the Amanzimtoti round of judging.
When a panel of four independent artists from the Howick Arts Society judged her entry as the winner of the eight finalists, her poster went forward to the multiple district for judging.
“I was surprised and so happy to hear I had come second,” said Danielle, who entered the competition for the first time this year.
Unfortunately as she has completed grade 7 this year, she will be too old to enter next year’s competition.
“I do art at school and at home and I would like to carry on with it in high school next year.
My inspiration for my poster was the sun rise depicting a new peace in our country and the celebration of peace.”
Danielle said she wants to save her prize money of R3,000 to buy herself a camera, as she is keen to take up photography.
Art seems to run in her veins, as she was awarded the trophies for creative art, and arts and culture at Amanzimtoti Primary School’s year-end prizegiving.
The Lions international peace poster contest has been running since 1988 and was started to inspire young people around the world between the ages of 11 and 13 years to visually depict and express their vision of world peace, a vision so badly needed in the world today.
Amanzimtoti Lions Club and Kingsburgh Lions Club jointly run the local competition.
A previous Toti entry made it through to the multiple district level, but no local poster has made it beyond.
“Congratulations to Danielle and her parents, she has done District 410C proud,” said Kingsburgh Lions Club president, Helen Toward. “She is a talented little artist and it was a close call between her entry and the winning poster.”
The overall winner at multiple district level, an entry from the Gordon’s Bay Lions Club, will now represent South Africa at the international round of judging.
