Police release man despite CCTV evidence

He was taken in for questioning as he walked past the police station entrance.

“Disappointed. Very disappointed.”

That’s the reaction of the manager of the Shell garage in Rosslyn Road, James Butterworth after he found out the police had released a man who was arrested after being seen on CCTV footage, robbing the shop in the early hours of Friday morning, 20 January.

On Monday afternoon, 30 January CCPO supervisor, Michael Mkhize was in Adams Road when he spotted a man walking past Toti SAPS.

He recognised the man, who is known to CCPO members as the same one seen in the CCTV footage at the garage.

He was taken in for questioning as he walked past the police station entrance, but James heard from the CCPO he was released the next day.

“I battled to open a case after the robbery,” said James. “The police were very reluctant to open a case and they said the cashier must, and not the business.

We had a drive-off incident on Tuesday, 31 January. Blue Security called the police and they responded within 10 minutes and imediately opened a case.”

Queries made to Amanzimtoti police station’s spokesman as well as the KZN police media desk on Wednesday morning, 1 February went unanswered at the time of going to press.
