Hours-old baby found in bin on the mend

The hospital estimated her age between four and six-hours-old.

A four-hour-old abandoned baby found in Isipingo last month is defying all odds to make a remarkable recovery.

The baby girl was abandoned in a bin by the Isipingo Spar on 8 May.

“We received a phone call from another organisation about a baby that had been abandoned and could we help if we had space, as they do not deal with tiny babies,” said the director of Open Arms, Youandi Gilain. “Of course we said yes. When we got her she was only a couple of hours old and still wet from birth.”

The hospital estimated her age between four and six-hours-old. The pre-term infant weighed only 1.9kg. “We took her straight to the hospital after we received her. She was strong but not doing too well. They discovered she had lost a lot a blood, which was why she was so pale and battling to breathe.”
