National taxi strike will not affect Amanzimtoti motorists

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge has confirmed that Amanzimtoti motorists will not be inconvenienced by a proposed national taxi strike on Wednesday, 12 July.

“Following further discussions last week, a decision was taken that the strike will focus around Pietermaritzburg and the legislature with essentially two demands,” said Cllr Beetge.
This includes:
- Permanent permits – in the old dispensation going back to the days of Valiants and E20s, they were given an indefinite permit. This, however changed with the new government necessitating constant renewal of their permits that becomes a costly exercise.
- While the taxi industry suffices in moving 60 per cent of commuters nationally, it receives no government subsidy, yet fulfills (according to Santaco) a service to the public that would otherwise fall to the state to provide.
