Durban animal rehab centre bottle-feeds road rescued steenbok baby

The team plans to release her towards the end of November.

A steenbok was admitted to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) after a Durban truck driver stopped to rescue the one-month-old buck on his way home from Vryheid.

Sikiandhar Shaik, a truck driver from DS Transport Services, spotted the steenbok sitting in the road near Vryheid after it was separated from its mother and stopped to rescue it.

The steenbok is currently being bottle-fed on full cream long-life milk mixed with egg yolk. She drinks about four litres a week and will stay on the bottle for another four to five months.

The steenbok will be rehabilitated at CROW and later released for a second chance at a free and sustainable life in the wild. The team plans to release her towards the end of November. “She doesn’t have any injuries and has happily adapted to her new surrogate mother and adopted siblings,” said CROW’s marketing and communications officer, Chandre de Bruyn. “Along with the other grey duikers and bush bucks, she is happily adapting to her new environment.”

There are many ways that members of the public can support CROW, which can be seen on the CROW website www.crowkzn.co.za. For more information, email info@crowkzn.co.za.
