The successful bust of a business burglary syndicate by Umkomaas police last week led to the further recovery of stolen goods as well as an unlicensed 9mm firearm, ammunition, cellphones, underwear and assorted items valued at a further R80,000 the following day.

The joint operation was held with Umkomaas SAPS crime prevention, provincial task team and ET Security Amanzimtoti on Thursday, 5 July. It followed on information they gleaned when they netted a man the previous day for at least 15 business robberies committed in Amanzimtoti and Scottburgh. He was arrested in possession of stolen goods valued at R130,000.
Armed with the information, police members infiltrated a group of criminals connected to committing business burglaries in Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh and Umkomaas areas. A further three men were arrested aged 32, 34 and 36 linked to business burglary cases in these areas. All the arrested men appeared in court on Friday, 6 July. Bail was opposed and they will re-appear in Scottburgh, Durban and Umbumbulu court on Tuesday, 11 July.

The criminals’ modus operandi saw them break through the roofs of businesses and cut open the safe to access cash before they stole various items from the business. Ongoing investigations will hopefully link them to further cases.
Ethekwini Outer South acting cluster commander, Brigadier Vukani Mgobhozi said: “This is excellent team work done by different teams in the SAPS and with good community police partnerships. I commend the good arrests made and I am confident it will have an impact in decreasing business break-ins in Amanzimtoti, Umkomaas and Scottburgh.”
