PEOPLE found guilty of discharging a firearm in a residential area or harming animals can face serious charges. This warning was issued by the Toti SAPS in response to the bird shooting case in Zulweni Gardens.

After the Sun sought comment from Amanzimtoti SPCA and Amanzimtoti SAPS communication officer on the matter, it was established that the person responsible for these cruel acts of late can face numerous charges.
Amanzimtoti SPCA’s manager Tracey Girling explained that during the festive season, the SPCA was called out after an Amanzimtoti resident shot a fish eagle. Tracey explained that KZN Wildlife was called immediately and dealt with the issue. She said reports of shooting birds, cats, monkeys or dogs must be accompanied by some type of photographic or video evidence.
There are laws prohibiting the discharge of a firearm in a residential area. Toti SAPS’ communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy explained how such a shooter could be held accountable.
“In the event that a firearm is discharged in a residential area, a criminal charge can be laid against the owner of the firearm. The owner will be charged with discharging a firearm in a residential or public area. Where the firearm is used to shoot or injure an animal, a charge of cruelty should also be laid against the perpetrator by the person who witnessed the attack,” explained Capt van der Spuy. “Unfortunately, it cannot be done as anonymously, as it is important to have a witness in order for the docket to be brought in front of the public prosecutor for a decision.”
