Amanzimtoti crime round-up

CCPO, ET and Blue work together to make a difference in the ongoing fight against crime.

Another ‘car guard’ is behind bars after he stole a cellphone from a Winkle business and was nabbed by the CCPO on Monday, 1 July. A member of the public called committee member, George Snodey to say his phone was stolen from Kingsburgh Centre.

“Unfortunately for the suspect, there was good CCTV footage of him committing the offence and the complainant knew the suspect by sight. After we viewed the footage and realised who it was, we approached a few informers about his whereabouts,” said Snodey. With help from CCPO supervisor, Michael Mkhize and his crewman, the suspect was apprehended, but unfortunately the cellphone could not be recovered. He was taken to Toti SAPS to be detained.

Stolen vehicles recovered

The CCPO helped with the recovery of a stolen vehicle in Winklespruit. “Information was received that the vehicle, which was wanted in Wellington in the Cape, was in the area and it was circulated over our radio,” added Snodey. It was found in Araucaria Road by CCPO, Blue Security and ET Rapid Response officers. The couple driving it had disappeared and Toti SAPS impounded the vehicle.

A stolen Colt bakkie was picked up by ET officer Lloyd Maphumulo in Warner Beach and with backup from the CCPO and Blue Security, Toti SAPS arrested the driver and impounded the bakkie. “CCPO, ET and Blue working together is making a huge difference in the ongoing fight against crime,” said Snodey.

Housebreakers arrested

A habitual housebreaker was nabbed after he got greedy and returned to the scene of his alleged crime at a Bhengu Road property. “He wasn’t happy with the wheelbarrow he (allegedly) stole at 3am while the people were sound asleep, so he came back later to take washing off the line. However, CCTV footage gave us a good idea of who we were looking for.”

After informers were offered a reward, the CCPO received a lead on his whereabouts and surrounded his house. He tried to escape through a window, but was quickly apprehended. The wheelbarrow and some towels were recovered from the people he had sold them to and he was arrested.

A housebreaker was nabbed by Triple M and his crewman Nhlanhla Mbambo after he left his fingerprints at a Wytham Harvey Road break-in in March. “After detectives asked us to assist, his photo was circulated on our WhatsApp group.

Triple M and Mbambo were patrolling in Syringa Place when they saw him walking with another suspect who has been arrested numerous times for house breaking. The detectives suspected that KwaMakhutha SAPS were looking for our suspect’s friend, so both were taken to Toti SAPS. It’s very important to open a case and SAPS has upped their game with regard to taking fingerprints, which is an important tool in the fight against crime, so always just take the time to register a case.”

On Tuesday, 25 June Snodey spotted a man walking into a pawn shop in Warner Beach with a brand-new rim and tyre, jack and wheel spanner. “With Triple M’s help, we found out he had allegedly conspired with a guard at a scrap yard in Umzinto to steal these items.” He was detained at Toti SAPS.
