In a sport which has more and more younger players these days, congratulations to Amanzimtoti Bowling Club’s (ABC) octogenarian Lofty van Tonder, who has won the men’s open singles final.
This is why the game is called one sport for life. Lofty will represent the club in Port Natal’s champion of champions. Well done to Dion Audie as a worthy runner-up. Pete Callaghan and Brian Masters defeated Mark Brodie and Les Brown in the men’s nominated pairs quarters by one shot. In the men’s novice singles, Danny Ross beat Shane Wilkinson to top his group. Danny will now join Paul Davies and Keith West, who will play each other in a final round robin to decide this year’s novice champion.
In the mixed pairs semis, Jeanne Alexander and Ray Robinson defeated Tokkie de Kock and Barry Bush. In the women’s nominated pairs, Tokkie de Kock and Dani Cardoso beat Jeanne Alexander and Jane Coetzee. Cathy Badenhorst beat Jenny Rautenbach in the women’s novice singles. Doreen Salmond overcame Heather Copper in the semis of the women’s open singles. Well done to Tokkie de Kock and Elmarie Young who were part of the winning team in the Dan Draper tournament.
At TGIF Peter Shepard won the 100 board. Barnie Smith, a social member was not present to win the members draw, next week’s draw is worth R200. Eric Gardner’s number came up in the key draw; in his absence Doug Joubert tried to choose the lucky key, but had no luck. However, Eric did win a bonus R100 prize; next week’s lucky key will be worth R1 940. Doug Joubert and Andrew Walker were presented with their level two umpires certificates.
Big chicks is on Sunday, 21 July, and muttons has been postponed until Sunday, 4 August. Birthday wishes are sent this week to Andy McDonald, Pete Callaghan, Shayne Tocher, Willem Pelser, Bobby Stewart, Neil Harris, Ossie Osborne, Jeanette Clarence and Hilary Lindsay.
