Nature’s Call – Yellow pansy

The yellow pansy is a strikingly beautiful butterfly which is common throughout most of South Africa.

However, in the Durban South area sightings of them are few and far apart.

I have seen them on the Bluff on one occasion, otherwise I have only seen them ever so often at the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve. This is a species that I have been wanting to get nice pictures of for ages, but never quite managed until recently.

I have found that a good telephoto lens works far better for photographing butterflies than the traditional macro lens, as it allows one to take a fair picture from further away without chasing your subject.

The yellow pansy can have up to a five centimetre wingspan and are particularly fond of flower nectar. These beauties should be found wherever their preferred host plant is grown, Bush Violet (Barleria obtuse) as well as Ribbon Bush (Hypoestes aristata).
