Yvonne’s legacy will live on
Yvonne was a very civic-minded person who always made her community a better place with her in it.
Yvonne Dixie died on Sunday evening, 4 August after a long spell in hospital.
Yvonne was one of the longest standing members of the Amanzimtoti Women’s Institute, having joined in 1965. She was president from 2014 until her death. She was also a member of Toti Conservancy and started the monthly full moon beach from Warner Beach to Winkle that many Toti residents have enjoyed over the years.
Yvonne was born in Pretoria in 1943 and married Clyde in Winklespruit in 1964. They have three children, Karen, Brenda and Warren, and seven grandchildren.
“She was a very energetic person,” said Clyde. “She never finished lower than first throughout her school career and great things were expected of her, so her father wasn’t too happy when she decided to study nursing. In those days, you needed lots of compassion to become a nurse, which she had. Her whole life was like that. She always put the children and I first before herself.”
Yvonne was a very civic-minded person who always made her community a better place with her in it. She drove an ambulance when she was a paramedic at the Red Cross in Warner Beach. When her girls took up guides, she became a girl guide mistress. She volunteered her time at the Queensburgh Cheshire Home, which provides residential accommodation and care to children with severe mental and physical disabilities.
“She loved the outdoors and hiking and she was member of the Caravan Club of SA. We were fortunate to travel SA in a caravan for three years from 2010 to 2012,” said Clyde.
She also loved tennis and was instrumental in rejuvenating the Kingsburgh Tennis Club.
“Yvonne was a very caring and thoughtful person. She never said a bad word about anyone. She was such an amazing person, who was loved by everyone.”
A memorial Service for Yvonne takes place on Thursday, 8 August at 3pm at St Winifred’s Methodist Church in Morton Road, Warner Beach. In lieu of flowers, donate to The Elder’s Voice.
