Ward councillor provides municipal updates

Residents are warned not to add residential cuttings to those of the municipality.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge has provided an updated on the latest municipal news.

The construction of the new Athlone Park water tower is nearing completion with the switch over planned at the end August or beginning of September.

Ipahla Road pipeline

An assessment of the Ipahla Road pipeline replacement has been completed and tenders have been received. “The replacement of the Ipahla line is scheduled to commence at the beginning of 2020 to not be effected by the December shut down of the building and construction industry. The project will also aim to change the supply feed to Ipahla and some other areas.”

Illovo Beach water tower

The tower’s structural base was recently called into question when sections of concrete broke off the top structure and pillars. The tower was temporarily decommissioned, with water supply instead of being introduced directly off the raising main. The knock-on, however, was a drop in pressure supply when the valves of four reservoirs that feed off the same line opened up for refilling, thereby leaving higher lying areas deprived of water first and reinstatement last as the system is gravity fed. “The tower was physically inspected and declared safe for operation, yet taking into account that replacement will be required in the not too distant future.”

Head visit

During facilitated site inspections of various repeated water and waste water problems in ward 97 with eThekwini head of water and sanitation, Ednick Msweli on 5 August, it was confirmed that both the replacement of the Illovo Beach tower and old piping infrastructure will be scheduled as a project for replacement by the design division.

The water department has already started with the additional water infrastructure from Warner Beach to Winklespruit reported on previously, with a site camp established at the informal trader site along Somerset Road. This will necessitate in the lifting of sections of existing walkway along Kingsway.

Kingsburgh library

“The new parking area, access and curbing as well as fencing at the Kingsburgh library and adjacent activities room (Lions Club) is all but complete and marks the end of a project that was initiated as far back as 2012 when we recommended that the node be combined to better facilitate residents of the area.”

Winter cutback

The annual winter cutback facilitated by the parks department is currently underway, which could account for branches and so on being noted along verges. “This is purely due to the extent of overgrowth being cut back and requiring disposal. Residents are, however, warned not to add residential cuttings to those of the municipality in the hope that it would be removed without any cost to themselves. Residential cuttings have to be facilitated to recognised disposal sites by residents personally.”
