Umkomaas golfers achieve good matchplay results despite tough conditions

The gusting winds meant it was impossible for anyone to hit the 13th green

The fierce winds and splatters of rain didn’t put off many of the members, who turned out to play in Bruce Sutcliffe’s annual sponsored day at Umkomaas Golf Club.

Scores were good considering the conditions and the first four spots were determined by count-outs. Sabiha Bacaus and Riek Janse van Rensburg took first place on a count-out from Wally Kent and Dave Mulroy, who also scored 41 points.

Barrie Taylor and Mickey Eriksen on 40 points counted out the father-son team of Tash and Viv Naicker for third place. Nearest the pins were awarded to Dave Kemp (4), Barrie Taylor (9) and Wally Kent (17), but it seems the gusting winds meant it was impossible for anyone to hit the 13th green.

The finals of the men’s matchplay also took place on Saturday, 31 August and the gents played well in tough conditions.

One of their up and coming juniors, Rory Bernadis played well to beat Dave Robertson and take the C division title. Nelson Moonsamy beat Chris Pillay in the B division and ‘big joe’ Mkhungo beat Tash Naicker in the A division to be crowned the club matchplay champion for 2019.

Thanks to chairman, Devlyn Fraser who also acts as greenkeeper as he guides their small, yet dedicated team of green staff.
