Man loses his eye in stoning incident on N2

A TOTI resident who lost his eye during a stoning incident at Umgababa has not decided whether or not to apply for compensation for the accident.

Kevin Jacobs explained that he is not even sure who he should approach to initiate the process. A piece of concrete smashed through his bakkie windscreen at 11.30pm on Sunday, 1 October.

It hit the left side of his face, fracturing the bones in about 20 places and cutting his left eye in half. The concrete crashed out of the back window.

Skeleton found near river

A MURDER docket has been opened after Umkomaas police found a skeleton on the southern banks of the Karridene River last Wednesday.

A police spokesman said there was a red, long-sleeved shirt, fawn trousers and a white takkie laying next to the skeleton, which suggests the skeleton is that of a man. He said according to sources, people in the area had noticed a rotting smell for a while, but were afraid to report the matter to the police.

Lightning strikes home

A SHULTON Park couple are counting the costs of damage to property after their house was struck by lightning last Tuesday evening.

Johan van Rensberg and his fiancé, Anne Gillingham, told the SUN that they arrived home shortly after 5.15pm to find their home had borne the brunt of a thunderstorm. “When we came into the house there was this cordite smell,” explained Johan. “We’re lucky we weren’t here at the time because we’re told that the sound of lightning when it strikes a house is like that of a cannon.”

SPCA is under fire from angry callers

TOTI SPCA has received abusive telephone calls following the shooting of a suspect rabid dog on 23 September.

SPCA staff were called to Athlone Park after a woman was bitten by a dog. As there was a chance the animal was rabid, SPCA officials said they had no choice but to have the dog shot. “The only way one can check for rabies is to test the brain once the dog is dead,” said Gwen Hayward of the SPCA.

Child drowns in quarry

A FIVE-year-old boy drowned in a water-filled quarry at Isipingo Rail on Tuesday last week.

Mabona Msomi, who lived at the Uganda settlement next to Isipingo Rail, was apparently playing in the quarry when he drowned. Divers from Toti Fire and Rescue Services recovered the boy’s body in about five meters of water. The child had been trapped underwater for over half an hour.
