Pensioner injured by manhole cover in Warner Beach

His leg was badly scratched and immediately started to bleed profusely.

A Warner Beach pensioner warns others to be careful walking on the paving after he injured himself on a loose manhole cover. John Groenewald, 69, was enjoying an early morning walk from Warner Beach to the Winklespruit pool on Tuesday, 21 January when the incident happened opposite 83 Kingsway at about 6.45am.

“The manhole cover was closed, but as I stepped on the lip, it swivelled and I fell in with my right leg up to my knee.” His leg was badly scratched and immediately started to bleed profusely.

“I do that walk most mornings, as I enjoy a swim in the Winkle pool. I would hate to think what would have happened if it was a young child or a woman who stepped on the cover.” He left the cover partly off to warn others and the SUN informed ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge of the danger.
