Kingsburgh Lions continue to serve
The organisation's usual services of food collections, flea market and diabetes testing have also come to a halt.
Honouring their motto of ‘we serve’, members of Kingsburgh Lions have found a few ways to assist the community while adhering to lockdown protocol.
Joining forces with Toti Lions in a local Toti church initiative run by councillor André Beetge, Kingsburgh Lions make regular monetary donations for the purchasing of much needed non-perishable food for local communities and families.
Lion Lyn Lyle said, “As we don’t have the necessary driving permits for distributing food parcels, this way still helps keep hungry tummies full, as members of the church initiative have the necessary permission to move around locally to buy groceries and deliver parcels to areas where people are struggling to feed their families.
“Similar to old mother Hubbard’s cupboard, our Kingsburgh Lions larder is now absolutely bare. We have donated the last food items to a local charity. This larder has been kept going by the amazing generosity of the 21 Club lunch ladies, who brought an item of non-perishable food to the monthly lunch, but for the last month, due to lockdown, there has been no 21 Club lunch date, nor is there likely to be for the foreseeable future.”

“As soon as we get the green light to resume these activities, we will notify the public via notices in our local newspaper. An area where we may still be of use is the distribution of warm clothes and scarves and beanies to ward off the cold weather, which is already on its way. Our Anything Warm campaign would normally be well underway by now, but since the Lions Club can’t physically have meetings, things move a little more slowly. We appeal to our regular beanie and scarves knitters not to stop knitting, but to carry on as they have done so energetically in the past. Unfortunately, we’ve also had to put our planned knit-a-thon on hold. The first one we held last year, was so successful that we wanted to repeat the performance. We still need those items desperately and will find a way to collect them from you and to deliver them to those in need. If you’ve had a wardrobe clean-out, we’ll be happy to make an effort to collect warm articles of clothing from you as well,” she added.
